Syringe Services Program

Syringe Services Program

The Syringe Exchange Program (SEP) provides syringe exchange and comprehensive harm reduction services to the community.

Syringe Exchange programs, like ours, have been responsible for reducing the rate of HIV/AIDS among people who use drugs in NYC from above 50% in 1990 to below 5% today.

Expanded Syringe Access Program

The Expanded Syringe Access Program (ESAP) allows registered Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses and Pharmacies to furnish up to ten syringes over the counter to anyone 18 years or older.

AHP has been at the forefront of enlisting these kinds of providers to participate in the program to make sterile syringes more widely available.

Treatment Readiness Services

AHP promotes the overall health and wellbeing of our clients by connecting them to health care and drug treatment services when they are ready, including long-term residential drug treatment, methadone maintenance, buprenorphine and other proven modalities upon request.

Other Programs and Services

AHP provides far more services than what it is contracted to do. Among the unfunded extra resources that AHP provides to its clients and to the wider community are included:

Hygiene Kits that are assembled by AHP staff and made available to clients and the wider community. The kits contain:
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Mouthwash
  • Dove Soap
  • Dove Deodorant
  • Face & Body Bar Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • 8 compressed towelettes
  • Face masks
  • 2 Fentanyl test strips
