HIV Testing & STI Testing
Since 2006, AHP has been committed to providing accessible and confidential HIV testing services to the community. Our voluntary-Participant requested rapid testing model ensures that individuals can access testing on their own terms. We employ a variety of recruitment strategies to engage members of the community in integrated HIV/HCV testing services, including:
- Community outreach: Engaging with individuals in public spaces and high-risk areas.
- Health-education: Leveraging the power of individuals with lived-experience to exercise their rapport with the community to promote testing.
- Community network recruitment: Utilizing existing community networks to reach vulnerable populations.
- Alternative venue testing: Offering testing at non-traditional locations, such as nightclubs, homeless shelters, and parks.
- Targeted mobile outreach: Deploying mobile units to areas with high rates of HIV transmission.
Our testing services are available on our mobile vans, at our Bushwick storefront office (where we also offer case management, information and referral, advocacy, and client escort services), and at community events and health fairs.
By providing comprehensive HIV testing and support services, AHP is working to reduce the stigma associated with HIV, improve access to care, and promote health equity in our community.
Buprenorphine Education/Treatment
Buprenorphine: A Tool for Recovery
Buprenorphine, often referred to as Suboxone, is a medication that has proven effective in helping individuals manage opiate use. It is similar to methadone in that it acts as a substitute for opioids obtained from illicit sources. However, unlike methadone, which is typically administered in liquid form at daily clinics, buprenorphine is a sublingual strip that can be prescribed by a doctor for extended periods.
AHP continues to provide information about the benefits of buprenorphine to clients who are interested in exploring this treatment option.
Hepatitis C (HCV) Testing
Check Hep C Project: Promoting Awareness and Access to Care
AHP established the Check Hep C Project to raise awareness about hepatitis C virus (HCV) and provide prevention education in communities with high rates of transmission. The project offers testing for individuals at risk of HCV infection and provides support to those who test positive.
Health Education and Counseling
Enhancing Health, Knowledge and Support
Education and risk reduction services are designed to improve the health knowledge, literacy, and self-efficacy of individuals at risk of HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well as those living with HIV. These services encourage individuals to access medical and supportive care to maintain optimal health.
Mental Health Services
Promoting Mental Health and Well-being for Individuals Who Use Substances
AHP is dedicated to supporting the overall mental health and well-being of individuals who use substances by providing tailored mental health services. A licensed clinical social worker collaborates closely with clients to address the underlying causes of high-risk behaviors, including experiences of trauma such as sexual assault, physical or mental abuse.
The licensed clinical social worker conducts comprehensive assessments, facilitates individual and group therapy sessions, and makes referrals for psychiatric and substance use treatment. Individuals enrolled in this program receive an annual mental health evaluation and, if necessary, are referred for more intensive psychiatric care, treatment, or medication.
